What did you want to be when you were a kid?

I had a passion to be an Academic though didn’t attain the desired level. This opportunity has given me the opportunity to learn practically.

What and where did you study?

Tell us about your career from the beginning until now.

I have held various jobs over my short career working in various roles. My last job where I was employed as a storekeeper assisted me in gaining the role a Rigging Loft Controller. It is very similar work except for the fact that the equipment we are dealing with is safety critical equipment and we need to make sure is that what we do issue is safe and compliant.

What training did you complete to become a Lifting Supervisor or Engineer?

The training we have been given is all practical. We have been shown where the various mechanical lifting equipment and accessories are being used on the various sites, we have been given explanations of what is the item is used for and its function. It is a continual process of learning but enjoyable.

Have you always been interested in mechanical lifting?

Not really as when I applied for the job I thought it would be the same as any other storekeeper job, but this one has a lot more responsibility and you have to have a good idea of the equipment’s function.

What qualities should a lifting supervisor or engineer have?

As A Rigging Loft Controller – You need to be able to understand the equipment that you are handing out. Looking at manufacturer literature which allows you to understand the equipment allowing you to assess its quality before issue in pre and post use inspections. You must be able to listen and communicate effectively.

How do you see yourself in five years?

In five years, I hope that I can progress and continue in my role on other projects and possibly learn additional roles in the mechanical lifting discipline such as Rigger or lifting Supervisor.
