What did you want to be when you were a kid?
As a kid I always wanted to do research and explore new things as I have a curious personality.
What and where did you study?
I studied geology at the Resources Development Organization
Tell us about your career from the beginning until now.
I have worked in various sectors and have gained skills in coordinating with multiple teams focusing on a company wide goal. My career so far has taught me how to communicate effectively but also how safety of the individual and individuals is paramount which is very important especially when you are handling and issuing lifting equipment and accessories.
What training did you complete to become a Lifting Supervisor or Engineer?
As a Rigging loft controller, – The combination of guidance from my supervisor and learning from them., also the on-job experience has equipped me with the knowledge & need for further knowledge on how the lifting equipment works as well as the various lifting techniques that the items can be used in. My training has been mainly practical based but I’m very keen to further my knowledge in learning about lifting plan creation and more technical equipment as the project progresses.
Have you always been interested in mechanical lifting?
I did not really know much about mechanical lifting until I started m, I have always been interested in mechanical lifting. I am a very observant person so most of the time I always try to find the reason behind the existence of things and here is where mechanical lifting comes in. I have an interest in the angles that slings can be used at and the stresses and strains they are under. There is a lot to digest but I like to know what the equipment does and why we are using it, it is very easy just to issue it but knowing what it is being issued for is for better understanding.
What qualities should a lifting supervisor or engineer have?
Effective communication, good listener and have an understanding of the equipment and what it is used for.
How do you see yourself in five years?
With the experience of lifting, I will have in five years to come, will help me further my mechanical lifting career. Due to my curious nature, I’m exploring to venturing in getting involved in the rigging tasks and advanced rigging methods. I see myself in becoming a lift supervisor and see this role as a steppingstone into understanding the basics of mechanical lifting and how to use the equipment safely.
