EACOP Supports Kabalega Independence Run 2024: Advancing Sustainability and Honoring Cultural Heritage

The East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) Ltd. proudly participated in the 2024 Kabalega Independence Run, an annual event held to honor the legacy of Omukama Kabalega, the esteemed leader of the Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom in Uganda. This year’s run not only celebrated Kabalega’s resilience and leadership but also focused on promoting environmental sustainability and building a greener future for the region.

A team of 20 EACOP staff members from the Hoima Hub participated in the event, running the 2km, 5km, and 10km races, and also contributing to a blood donation drive.

Matred Murungi, EACOP’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Manager, represented Deputy Managing Director John Bosco Habumugisha at the event. In her remarks, she emphasized the company’s dedication to sustainability: “As a company deeply rooted in the communities where we operate, we are honored to support the Kabalega Independence Run. This event not only allows us to celebrate the legacy of a great historical leader but also gives us the opportunity to contribute to initiatives that will have a lasting environmental impact. Our commitment to sustainability is unwavering, and the ROOTs campaign demonstrates our dedication to creating a greener future.”

EACOP’s involvement in this year’s run centered around its broader sustainability strategy, which includes promoting tree planting and clean energy solutions. As part of the company’s ROOTs campaign, EACOP plans to plant 60,000 trees across the 10 districts along the pipeline route, including Hoima and Kikuube. This initiative, in collaboration with the Ministry of Water and Environment, the Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom, and the Hoima Catholic Diocese, reinforces EACOP’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions, conserve biodiversity, and create long-term value for the communities it serves.

The funds raised from the Kabalega Independence Run will go toward supporting sustainability projects such as reforestation and clean energy initiatives. This ensures that the positive impact of the event will continue well beyond the run itself, driving meaningful environmental change in the region.
