EACOP Contributes 12,600 Trees to Uganda’s National Tree Planting Campaign under the ROOTs Program

EACOP reaffirmed its commitment to environmental sustainability by participating in the 2024 National Tree Planting Campaign in Gulu District under the “Running Out of Trees (ROOTs)” program. The event, spearheaded by Uganda’s Ministry of Water and Environment, saw various stakeholders unite to combat deforestation and restore Uganda’s natural landscapes.

The 2024 edition of the ROOTs campaign was graced by the Chief Guest, Uganda’s Chief Justice, Justice Owiny-Dollo. It attracted a broad range of participants, including government agencies, private sector actors, civil society organizations, and local communities. This year’s theme, “Community-Driven Landscape Restoration through Tree Growing for Improved Livelihoods and a Healthy Functioning Ecosystem,” underscored the essential role communities play in preserving and restoring the environment for future generations.

EACOP, as a key partner, contributed 12,600 tree seedlings valued at $5,000 towards the initiative. These trees will support Uganda’s larger goal of planting 40 million trees annually, with one tree representing each Ugandan. This contribution aligns with EACOP’s sustainability goals, which include landscape restoration, biodiversity conservation, and minimizing the carbon footprint of the pipeline’s operations.

Matred Murungi, EACOP’s Social and Environmental Investment Manager, represented Deputy Managing Director John Bosco Habumugisha at the event. Speaking on behalf of EACOP, she emphasized the company’s commitment to environmental stewardship.

As part of its broader environmental initiatives, EACOP has committed to planting 60,000 trees across the 10 districts along the pipeline route. This long-term plan reflects EACOP’s resolve to enhance landscape restoration and foster resilience in the communities where it operates. By partnering with local authorities and community leaders, the company aims to ensure that the trees planted today will thrive for future generations, contributing to a sustainable and greener Uganda.

The 2024 National Tree Planting Campaign serves as a powerful reminder of the critical role corporate entities like EACOP play in promoting environmental sustainability and creating a healthy ecosystem that supports livelihoods across Uganda
